Here in Waldeck-Frankenberg, the largest Hessian district in terms of surface area, agriculture plays a significant role. 70,000 hectares of the Waldecker Land are devoted to agriculture, 40,000 as fields and 30,000 as pastures. The touristic strength of the Waldecker Land is in its organically developed cultural landscape, a product of centuries-long care by farmers. Regional products today are of great importance and the Waldecker Land has quite a bit to offer. Guests can buy regional produce in the many specialized butcher shops, on the weekly markets or directly from the producer.
Basdorfer-Hutewald
With the project “Basdofer Hutewald” visitors and the local population can gain an impression of a form of forest exploitation that was long practiced here as well as rare types of domestic animals, many of which are extinct today. At present three different kinds of pigs are being bred: the “Bunte Bentheimer Schweiner”, “Düppler Weideschweine” and „Schwäbisch-Hällische Landschweine”. In Basdorf Hutewald the animals have been traditionally kept in a manner appropriate to their species. For this reason the pork products produced have the highest quality. You can order different kinds of sausage, black pudding, liver sausage, brawn and ham directly by mail via info @ hutewald-basdorf.de.
“Pork from here”
Several years ago farmers from the Waldecker Land joined forces to promote their pork under the logo “Schwein von hier” (pork from here). The farmers have agreed to maintain strict guidelines to use feed only from grain they have grown themselves, they must be kept in the correct manner, and the transport route to the slaughterhouse should be short.
„Waldecker organic pig“
The pigs come from the region. The feed is exclusively taken from the farmers’ own, organically controlled agriculture, and growth enhancers and preventive antibiotics are taboo. Species are expected to be kept in an appropriate manner.
Meat and sausage products from Waldecker organic pigs are available in all Kleeblatt-regional organic shops in the Waldecker Land and in Fritzlar.
