National geopark GrenzWelten
A Geopark is not a new preservation category, but rather a hallmark of excellence that does not involve any restrictions. Rather, it is a chance to develop the strengths of a region and thus to increase its level of recognition. In the national geopark Waldeck-Frankenberg there are a number of natural attractions, such as the first Hessian national park and two nature preserves which offer unique examples of the geological and cultural-historical development of the European continent. It is possible to have a lively encounter with geological and regional history, the cultural landscape, the historical development, the history of exploitation and local artistic and artisan traditions in the geopark. A network of older and newer attractions is present and they promote the geological, natural and cultural-historical highlights. The geopark Waldeck-Frankenberg is made up of seven independent and transregional geopark centres with distinctive geotouristic profiles.
Visitors’ mines
The geological diversity of the Waldecker Land has blessed it with many natural resources. Many mines and trial areas have been preserved, which are in part open to the public.
