Canoeing
A river is a natural habitat for many – often rare – animal species and plants, which can be easily discovered during a canoe tour.
Diemel and Eder Rivers cordially invite you to take a canoe tour. The Diemel River is Hesse’s northernmost and also smallest canoeing river. Of the total length of 123 km, the Diemel River is navigable for a length of 46 km from Marburg to the mouth at the Weser River throughout the year. Along this stretch, 10 weirs must be crossed which means carrying the canoe around. A canoe trailer might be helpful. The Eder River is approx.180 km long and turns from a small but rapid creek into a sizable mid-range mountain river. In Herzhausen, the Eder River empties into the 27 km long Lake Edersee, one of the largest dammed reservoirs in Europe. A total of 70 km are navigable by canoe. The section upstream of Lake Edersee should not be navigated by canoe, and the section between the dam and Lake Affoldern is closed.
Diemel and Eder Rivers are rather shallow in most sections, but boaters should be wearing a life preserver and, of course, should know how to swim.
On canoe trips there are various measures to protect the environment that you should know about. Information is available at the federal state office in Kassel, telephone: +49 (0) 0561/106481.
Of course it is more fun to paddle along in good weather, but by and large you should remember that, „there isn’t such a thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!“
So then, let’s hit the water, and have a good trip!
