GeoPark GrenzWelten - between the Hochsauerland and Hessische Senke

With an area of 3,700 km², the Nationale Geopark GrenzWelten includes a geologically divers and scenically attractive low mountain range in the border area between Northern Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia.

From the peaks of the Sauerland and the Kellerwald down to the valleys and basins of the Hessische Senke, exciting insights into geology and the development of the natural and cultural landscape open up.

250 million years ago, primeval reptiles lived at the coast of the Zechsteinmeer, which extended to the eastern border of the Sauerland. Huge, up to eight metres tall ‘iguanodons’ were roaming the Karst area near Brilon in the Cretaceous period, 100 million years ago.
Gold, iron and copper ore shaped the economical development on both sides of the state border for centuries.

Due to its position at the transition from the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge in the west to the Hessische Senke in the east, the GeoPark combines different rock formations from different geological periods. Over 400 million years of the history of the earth comes alive.

You decide how far back you want to travel: From the folding of the Schiefergebirge, from a deep oceanic basin, to the use and commoditisation of the area by man - 10 regional GeoPark centres present the different steps of the development of the natural and cultural landscape. Museums, information centres, adventure trails and numerous other events and attractions combine information and active experiences of the area.

True to the motto "BorderAreas - AreaBorders" the GeoPark contributes to an active understanding of the relationships between geology and landscape, human and nature. It sensitises us to deal with our geological and historical-cultural heritage in a sustained manner.
