Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Preserve

Kellerwald Forest, limited to the north by Bad Wildungen and the Eder Mountains, is geologically part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Only a part of the Kellerwald region is located inside Waldecker Land.

Rich forests, contiguous and expansive wooded areas, and idyllic rural scenery are found by the guest looking for recreation and relaxation. The stated purpose for this nature preserve is to protect this 400 km² large area pursuant to its natural setting and its suitability for recreation, and to advance sustained development of infrastructure in agreement with environmental, nature preserving and recreational demands.

The visitor is greeted by a unique landscape inside the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Preserve, designed by nature and man alike. Deep quiet beech forests are crossed by narrow creeks, leading into a cultivated scenery of meadows full of blossoming flowers and hedges. Embedded into this scenery, and surrounded by steep, sun-warmed slopes with gnarly oaks, is the clear, bluish-green Lake Edersee. The highest elevation of the nature preserve is Wüstegarten mit a height of 675 m in the southern portion of the Kellerwald Forest.

With its expansive woods, Kellerwald Forest offers close to ideal conditions for hikers.
Along with rare plants and animals, such as the field carnation, owls and black footed storks, you might be lucky enough to observe racoons, ravens, red and fallow deer and moufflons.

Through the exclusive experience of nature, the National Park by the same name located inside the nature preserve contributes to an increased recognition level of the entire nature preserve area.

Discover this primitive area of the authentic low mountain range, characterized by immense beech forests, a fascinating landscape, the authenticity of which is hard to surpass.
