Lake Diemel Nature Preserve

It is unspoiled nature, the chirping of birds, the gurgling of both small rivers, Diemel and Aar, and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Diemel which characterize the beauty and recreational value of the Lake Diemel Nature Preserve.

The nature preserve is located in the utmost northwestern corner of Hesse. One third of its area sticks into the neighboring state of North Rhine Westphalia. Large contiguous forests dominate the scenery. Only to the southeast of Lake Diemel, toward Korbach, the forest recedes to make way for crop fields and meadows.
Since its incorporation in 1965, the Lake Diemel Nature Preserve Association has made it its task to protect, care for and develop this land. Its members have primarily focused on retaining the high heath areas around Usseln and Willingen.

The centerpiece of the nature preserve is the Diemel Valley Dam built between 1920 and 1924. The lake owes its popularity to the varied recreational offerings which came about in addition to the water management tasks.

Charming Romanic churches in small villages, the highest elevations at Langenberg and Hegekopf Mountains, both of them 843 m high, Osterkopf Mountain at 708 m, the Diemel Springs, and interesting rock formations attract many hikers to the idyllic Lake Diemel Nature Preserve each year.
