Waldeck
The former mountain town of Waldeck owes its existence to a knight who, once upon a time, built his castle high on top of the wooded hill overlooking the Eder valley. But since this fortress built on natural rock did not offer sufficient space for all of his people, a settlement was founded in the immediate vicinity which later became today’s town of Waldeck.
After construction of the Eder Valley Dam (1908 – 1914), vacationers started to discover the natural beauty of the landscape surrounding Waldeck. Incorporated communities are Alraft, Dehringhausen, Freienhagen, Höringhausen, Netze, Nieder-Werbe, Ober-Werbe, Sachsenhausen, Selbach and Waldeck with a population of 7,103 as of June 2011.
