Willingen (Upland)

Incorporated in 1974 from the communities of Bömighausen, Eimelrod, Hemmighausen, Neerdar, Rattlar, Schwalefeld, Usseln, and Welleringhausen, the town of Willingen (Upland) has a population of approx. 6,204 (as of June 2011). The main community of Willingen represents a wintersport region of international ranking, a medicinal spa and state-certified Kneippen spa, while Usseln and Schwalefeld are both spa resorts with medicinal climates.

Rare plants may be encountered during a walk through the protected heath highland areas of Upland. The recreational options in Willingen include a lagoon adventure spa with saunas, water slides and an outside swimming pool, all the way to an ice-skating rink.

Take a chance to visit the world’s largest ski jump in Strycktal where its first world cup ski jump competition took place on January 8, 1995. Since 2002, Mount Ettelsberg near Willingen with 838 m in height, features a new attraction. The Willinger Heath Highland Tower, 58 m tall and equipped with a 41 m tall outdoor climbing wall, offers the highest accessible location in all of northwestern Germany. From here, you have a grand view all the way to the city of Kassel, far into the Sauerland region, and up to the Vogelsberg Mountain.
In the summer of 2007, besides an 8-person gondola cable car, a high-performance snow machine was installed serving the five large ski slopes.
