The Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park

Bounded to the north by Bad Wildungen and the mountain range of the Ederberg, the ‘Kellerwald’ is still part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains in terms of geology, thrusting like a bastion far into the Lower Hessian Depression. Only part of the ‘Kellerwald’ area is located in ‘Waldecker Land’.

In this nature park, recreation seekers find abundant forests, extensive contiguous forest landscapes and a rural idyll. The purpose of the designation of this protected area is to protect its area of 400 km² in conformity with its natural environment and its recreational opportunities and to promote a sustainable development of the infrastructure that is environmentally compatible with nature conservation and regeneration.

The cultural landscape of the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park

In the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park, visitors can expect a unique landscape. Nature and man have worked equally well in its design. Deep, peaceful beech forests are crossed by narrow streams. They lead into a diverse cultural landscape of flowered meadows and hedges. The clear blue-green waters of the Edersee wind through this countryside, surrounded by steep, warm slopes with gnarled oak forests. With a height of 675 m, the ‘Wüstegarten’ in the southern part of the ‘Kellerwald’, is the highest elevation of the nature park.

With its extensive forests, the ‘Kellerwald’ offers ideal conditions for hikers. In addition to rare plants and animals such as the cheddar pink, eagle owls and black storks, you may also be able to observe – with a bit of luck – raccoons, common ravens, red deer, fallow deer and mouflons during the day.

The Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, which is located in the center of the nature park, is the focus of nature conservation objectives and, with its exclusive natural environment, contributes to the enhancement of the image and the raising of the awareness level of the entire nature park region.

Explore the low-mountain ranges characterized by large beech tree stands and discover a fascinating countryside, the authenticity of which is hard to beat.
